Visiting a traditional dance restaurant is an excellent way to experience some Ethiopian culture with live music and dancing from around the country as you sample the local dishes.
At a traditional dance restaurant, you can sample a range of different Ethiopian dishes, all served in the traditional style with injera (a slightly sour, spongy flatbread that is the staple of the Ethiopian diet). Both meat and vegetarian options are available. Whilst you eat, musicians play typical Ethiopian music, which has a very distinctive style and sound, and dancers perform traditional dances from around the country. Each region has it's own traditional costume and style of dance. Most dances involve the upper body, especially the shoulders, and are very energetic. If you're feeling brave, you can even join in the dancing, although this is by no means compulsory.
Your guide will pick you up from your hotel at 7:30pm and take you to the traditional dance restaurant. Throughout the evening, they will explain about Ethiopian culture and traditions, from the food you eat to the musical instruments you hear and the dances you see. Ethiopians are famous for their energetic style and especially their shoulder dancing, which remains popular with old and young alike. Each region has it's own traditional costume and distinct dances, which your guide will explain. Many Ethiopians are keen to show off their moves, given a little encouragement, and are generally delighted if foreigners join in too. This is of course entirely optional, but the music and energy can be infectious! The evening finishes at around 10:30pm when your guide will take you either back to your hotel, or the airport if your are departing that night.
