Ethiopia has a unique culture when it comes to food, with complex spice mixes and something bordering a national obsession when it comes to the sour, spongy bread known as injera. Meat is popular, but the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has a complex calendar of "fasting" days, when only vegan foods are eaten. Fresh vegetables are usually in plentiful supply, as are green chillis!
This is a half-day tour, starting either from our office in the Taitu Hotel (Piassa area of town) or with pick-up from your hotel, by prior arrangement. Throughout the tour, you will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide, who will also act as translator if necessary. You will be shown behind the scenes at a restaurant serving traditional Ethiopian food. There will be opportunities to learn about different dishes, have a go at helping make some of them, and of course taste them. Then you'll head to the Mercato area to learn all about injera and how it's made before finishing off the tour with either a traditional coffee ceremony or a trip to Tomoca - Addis Ababa's most famous coffee shop.
