Kibish is a colourful village, set in a bowl surrounded by forested hills.  The area is best known as home to the Surma people, who still maintain a traditional pastoralist lifestyle.

The Surma people are best known for the lip-plates worn by the women, but they have a complex political system based around age-sets, similar to that of the nearby and related Maasai people, who live in the Kenya-Tanzania border area.  There are many small and fascinating villages surrounding Kibish, and evenings can be spent bathing in the river.
